How Do We Know? Oversight in Complex Organizations

Outward Bound Schools are complex organisations. Our work often happens in remote places and is difficult to oversee. How can management ensure that what they think is happening is actually happening? The same question will be asked of Boards who are even further removed from delivery but have ultimate responsibility for what happens. This panel will explore how they address this issue in their own Schools as well as identify ongoing concerns that might need addressing.

Theory of Change Process (for Operations staff)

This is an opportunity for colleagues involved in Operations to participate in work that will help us communicate what we do more effectively. Working with Dr. Theresa Melton from Clemson University, a member of the OBI Research Advisory Committee, participants will explore the newly developed Outward Bound Theory of Change (ToC). This session provides an opportunity to respond to the framework through discussion and critical reflection, ensuring the final version resonates with the collective understanding and experience of the global OB network. Participants will consider how the ToC aligns with their own School’s practice and explore how it can be used to communicate the value and impact of Outward Bound more clearly to participants, partners, funders and other stakeholders.

Managing an Outward Bound School is challenging day-to-day which makes it challenging to spot the red flags when things get really difficult. This is the opportunity to learn from colleagues who have been through it. What were the red flags? What were the responses? With the benefit of hindsight what would have worked better? Participants will leave with an awareness of what to look out for, when to respond and what might work in their own School.
